I am not bothered at all that this has been deleted, but I am curious why it's been deleted rather than ignored, as most other extension are.

Well if it just needed improvements like so many other extensions do, I would've ignored it. But based on the comments on the r73498, it needs to be completely rewritten so I didn't see any reason to keep it around until someone has the time/desire to do so.
